  • Help: Can you ID this cabbage problem please

    Hi All

I have a problem in my greenhouse and I'm not sure how to deal with it - could it be aphids?

I grew some cabbage earlier this year, and I started to get this on the leaves, they dropped off - so I chucked them out.

A friend gave me these and within a week this has happened, so i can only assume that something is in my greenhouse causing this

    Any ideas please

Looks like scorch to me. It is not really necessary to grow cabbages in the green house at this time of year. Put them outside in the shade and see what happens.

I agree they really don't like the heat in the greenhouse - it looks as if it's a touch of botrytis to me, but the fresh air outside should sort that out as well

They are obviously too hot. Put them outside but protect from birds and butterflies.

I agree it's the heat, but.... When I read my book on how to grow stuff all year round in your polytunnel, it says you need to have finished planting by the end of August or possibly September at the latest... how can you do this if the weather is still hot and sunny? I've got a few brassicas in pots outside at the moment waiting their turn in the tunnel, but I'm reluctant to plant them at the moment because of the heat! (Not that I'm complaining about the sun or the heat, don't get me wrong!).

Well ... I wouldn't waste polytunnel space on brassicas, they do perfectly well outside

Mmm, I've got some outside too TS, but I thought you could extend the season by using a tunnel as well? I'm simply following the advice in my 'grow stuff in your tunnel all year round' book at the moment, which suggests brassicas amongst other things. Personally, this is my first full year of growing veg in any meaningful way, and in a new country, so I'm still experimenting about what works and what doesn't... I also don't know what would happen to eg oriental greens outside if temps drop below -17deg like they've done in the past? Or even caulis? Would they survive?
