As you say, the picture isn't very good. My guess is either horseradish or jerusalem artichokes.

If they are scattered clusters of them about the lottie, I'd be tempted to replant them all together...someone clearly loved them...and you may too!

Thanks both! Yes, i think the best course of action is to plug 'em back in and see what shoots up! I'm kinda hoping they're artichokes...

Looks like Jerusalem artichoke to me. Is that a yellow flower coming out on the top of the big one? JA has a yellow flower... (Horseradish has a white flower)

Jerusalem artichoke is a great vegetable to grow. It will grow pretty much anywhere.

                    simples ...
                    clean one under the tap.
scrape some off ...if its tough and woody it wont be a j.a ... taste it ...if its horseradish you will know straight away. If they are j.a's throw 90% and keep the last 10% severely curtailed. If its horseradish give 90% away and keep the last 10% severaly curtailed......

A friend has suggested it's wild parsnip and thus poisonous! But will scrub one up in a mo once my critters have stopped giving their Dad the runaround!

That could be a yacon tuber although they don't look like them in the picture in the opening post.

I'd definitely go for JA's, right down to the slight pink/red stain on damaged areas. Plant a few and see what comes up.
