  • Hello Summer here

Good evening my name is Summer I am in my third year of allotment life the first year was spend digging and preparing plot second year transfering to bigger plot with greenhouse and shed already in situ lucky me and this year growing and experimenting.
I live in Cornwall and have soooooooo many questions that you will probably get sick of hearing from me.
My first one is where do most of you get your seeds from please? Last year I used Tuckers as a kind chap on our allotment takes orders and goes and collects but have to say not very pleased with my stuff so far, course that could just be me!!
Anyway looking forward to getting to know you all and enjoying your expertise.
    Cheers me dears
    Summer

Hello Summer, welcome to the Vine. Could you add your location (nearest town would be good) to your profile please? Then it will show on every post you make and we won't have to keep asking where you are.

As to questions, we love them. Never be afraid to ask, you may get lots of different answers but that's just part of growing your own.

I'd never heard of Tuckers seeds, so just googled and now realise they are based in the Southwest. I get my seeds from a variety of sources, as do most of us I think. Depends on what you are looking for really.

Hello Summer and welcome! Are you trying to confuse me - I'm sure its nearly Autumn now
As Rusty says - bring on the questions! Its also worth have a good browse through the Forum - you'll find answers to many of the questions you'll probably want to ask
I buy my seeds from various suppliers - but not usually the larger ones unless they're being sold off at 50p as they are now in the big Garden Centres. Its a good time to buy in ready for next year.

Probably not on the scale you want, but I never know, I use Moreveg. They have a good range of seeds but for an allotment they supply seeds in smaller quantities. I just bought some overwintering onions, they came as 60 seeds per pack. At 60p a pack, I like them as I have a veg plot in a garden so I am not going to plant out 200 onions. Equally you could get 3 different types of onions, have a variety and about the same as a "normal" pack of onion seeds. It works for me.

Based down in Taunton area I think, and I am pretty sure they send the seeds before actually getting the payment. You get email notification when sent, my last notification was 2 hours after ordering. Never been more then the next day.

Welcome, This is a great place for questions, you have the collected knowledge of hundreds of experienced gardeners at you finger tips. I have a question for you. Did you dig that first plot over then give it up? that must have been very annoying for you.

yes I did dig it over get rid of all the rubbish and slate, but, I was also next to the allotment your doing everything wrong person, it was in a very shady place that would not get any sunshine early evening and the one I was being offered by the club secretary has a stunning view looking over the estuary, so it was worth it.
I will take a photo of my view and put it on here.
Oh well off to work now until 6.30 yak but cant resist one question. My onions didnt really do very well this year but I planted them in the Spring so I would like to plant some Winter onions but dont know which to plant any ideas welcome.
                          Cheers me dears

As for winter onion sets, Radar seems to be flavour of the month but there are many excellent varieties. If your growing a lot why not plant several and see which suits you best. Apparently winter onions dont store so well as those grown in the spring so you have to eat them up quicker. Some people plant winter onions to get an early crop and then some in the spring for later use and storage.
