Hello Janiebaby, Welcome to the Vine.

Always tell newbies to stick a rough location in their profile cos it helps us answer some questions.

Most courgettes are the trailing kind which you should be able to get to climb rather than the 'bush' kind

However I wouldn't say that the former would take up less space as the latter are bred to be compact.

Difficult to explain but the actual hub of the plant is the same but trailers then sent out rambling shoots if you get me....plus of course the framework you use would take space and create shade.

I'd stick with a bush like 'Tosca'...or if you insist 'Defender'

Hi janie, and welcome to the Vine from me too. I've only ever grown bush type courgettes myself, and I find each plant only spreads about 2ft all round. Is space a major problem for you then?

            Hello Janie
Welcome to the vine. Two years ago I grew 3 black forest courgettes up a wigwam and they were very good but I grew them last year & they were hopeless.
Hopefully we will have more sun this year so they ll succeed again.
            Good luck

There is an F1 climbing one called Black Forest. I think I saw it in the Fothergills catalogue.

Check out the seed catalogues under patio veg and I'm sure you will find a courgette to suit your space.

I can also confirm that. F1 'Black Forest' allegedly, and I shall be growing that variety myself this year, having just snuck out to the kitchen, snaffled the last remaining two cold roast potatoes on the way to the conservatory to check this information for you, she said with her mouth full.....
