  • The Hazards Of Gardening .......

My dad had a gardening accident on Thursday which resulted in some awful injuries.

He had done something that I know I have done in the past - and probably most of us from time to time.

He was cutting back the tree that was creeping through from next door, but we arent exactly sure what happened next and neither does he remember. We think he tripped and fell backwards, hitting the back of his head on the corner of the coldframe. 7 stitches were needed in hospital.

But this wasn't the worse injuy he got. Before pruning he had been sowing seed directly into the ground. They are plagued with cats, so to keep them off he put a net over the top and secured it down with short canes. Either as he fell, or after he hit his head, one of these canes went straight through his calf muscle! Blood was everywhere! It has split the muscle and the consultants advised against stitching as it would need the muscle stitching first, then the skin. They have glued it together at the moment and strapped his foot so he cannot flex it as this will reopen the wound.

Needless to say but I removed all my short canes from my allotment today

My dad is ok though, now home from hospital but very black and blue. I think he is looking forward to the nurse coming every day to dress his wounds!

Apple Tree: Are you hinting my apples aren't what they ought to be?
Scarecrow: Oh, no. It's just that she doesn't like little green worms!

Your poor father - and poor you . That sounds awful. You could probably use short canes if you covered the ends with something - yoghurt pots maybe? or those little green caps you can buy?

eeek. wishing your old bean has a swift recovery.

keep a close watch on him as a bump on the back of the head may cause double vision. the double vision will most likely be vertical. i work with eyes and regularly have patients that get double vision due to a bump on the back of hte head.

Thankyou, Ill pass the well-wishes on.

Yes I guess the end caps would work as long as the surface area was big enough - but the strange thing was the cane never even ripped his trousers. It was just the force of falling on it that puctured his skin.

I guess you think of these things if you have young children about - but because we dont have any about, I never thought Id need to OAP proof a garden ha ha

He is on the mend though, I think he is suffering more from injured male pride

Sorry to hear this, I hope he makes a speedy recovery. I buy cheap tennis balls to put on top of canes - they fit snugly and prevent injury if you fall on them. I gave myself a nasty poke in the eye one year - never again!

Ouch! The eye FF? That must of hurt

I doubt my dad will be using canes again in a hurry! Nor will my mother let him, whether they are a few inches high or not

So sorry to hear about your Dad. It sounds like a very nasty injury he's got there I hope he soon feels much better. I use the green caps on my canes after doing the same trick as Flo.

ouch....hope he's soon mended. I put empty plastic bottles (the small ones) on the ends of canes ....they rattle in the wind and hopefully scare away pesky things as well.

A timely reminder, ZZZ, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents records about 300,000 accidents in the garden each year that require hospital treatment, a third being children, the most common being falls and cuts....
