  • Have they been overwatered?

I have been on holiday for the last couple of weeks and I asked an allotment neighbour to keep an eye on my polytunnel. I had only been watering the tomatoes once a week or so, maybe every 3 days in the very hot weather and they seemed happy and thriving. However, my neighbour started watering the polytunnel for me before I had even gone away and I think he has possibly watered them every day. I came back today and noticed that lots of the tomatoes are suffering from cracking and when looking online it suggests this sometimes happens when a wet period follows a dry period. I was purposefully only watering them every few days so they would not rely on water every day and would send roots down deep. Will I now have to keep watering them every day or can I get them back to searching for their water from the ground?

he probably forgot to water them for a few days and then gave them a good soaking when he remembered

I water mine every day but then they are mostly in grow bags. I would surmise that as you water so little the skins become tougher, then given an influx of water they swell quickler than the skin can adapt to. The moral here is to leave precise instructions and threaten legal action if they are not followed.

That's totally good practise for most things, but if you keep toms short of water they're likely to punish you with blossom end rot
