  • Harvesting Onions Early?

    Hi everyone

Sigh, not sure where to start other than going to bed, I'm pooped!

In a pretty short space of time, we decided and arranged to move, but not locally. I have an allotment which is now going badly growing weeds (I was barely getting on top of the ones I'd inhertited which must have been loving the wet weather recently!) but I do have a small amount of veg in there

I haven't been able to get there for a few weeks with work and bad weather and hubby popped over today to check the state of it for me. Hubby doesn't know growing veg really so he had a basic look for me. He said the onions are yellowing at the tips but he didn't check to see if they had flopped (I didn't think to ask him to) and the weeds holding the stems up meant he didn't notice a mass floppage (that sounds rather dodgey, haha)

We're pushing for a move date as soon as possible - there is no chain involved as I've managed to finance renting our current house and getting a mortgage on the new one, the new one is vacant. But my concern is that I might not get back to the lottie to lift my veg as we'll be in a mass rush (hopefully) to pack ready to move. So, I'm wondering about lifting the onions early rather than lose them

Without having been there to see them (and I won't now until earliest the first Sunday in August as we're in Wales thid weekend) I have no idea how big they are - but I suspect they're not fully grown yet so will have smaller bulbs. But... well.. Can I store them? Do I treat them just like the fully grown counterparts and dry them in the sun or are these going to need to be just used quickly or chopped and frozen?

    Thanks as always
    Shortie
    xx

Welcome to the vine Shortie, for the sake of 2 weeks, I would be tempted to leave them then you can see first hand what they are like & make a decision then.

Comparing with growing for showing, for the under 250gm class we harvest before maturity. They keep ok. I'd give it a go unless they really aren't big enough to bother with.

Thanks all, I'll leave it until Sunday 5th (first opportunity I might have to get down there) and judge from there in that case

I suspect my weekends from now on in will be filled with packing my life into boxes hence being worries about when I would be able to get back Last time we moved, we had one little one and two cats. We now have two little ones, a cat and a kitten, two dogs, chickens and fish!
