  • Harvesting garlic

    Hi guys,

Im moving house at the end of July but i have a huge amount of garlic romping away in my mini allotment, if its not fully ready to harvest by the time i have to move, can i still dig it up and use it and will i be able to store it?
I wasnt expecting to be moving when i planted it and i really dont want it to go to waste.

    Thanks

I haven't grown garlic but hope to this/next year. If it is not ready for storing, I'm guessing that you could crush it and freeze in an ice cube tray.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

When did you plant it Blue? If you planted it October/November last year, it should be ready by the end of this month.

You should be able to harvest it unless you planted it recently. If its been in the ground for just a few months it should be fine but perhaps it may be a little small.
like Florence said, it very much depends on when you planted it.
        Good luck with the move.

Thanks guys, i planted it all last year oct/nov, it just doesnt seem to show any signs of slowing down and dying back! its the best batch i ever grown and i was gutted at the thought of having to leave it.
I might dig one up at the weekend just to see how big they are.

          Many thanks

Mine went in on 21st Sept and I harvested it this week; and the cloves are lovely and fat....so I'd just dig it a week before you go and let it dry off and take it with you.

Leave it till the last moment and dig it up. Now is the time that a lot of garlic is swelling so the longer you can leave it the better. Definitely take it with you.

Besides, even if the cloves are teeny they are still great to use if you squash them with a pestle or something instead of trying to peel the durned things.
