  • Halo Blight on beans!

Help!!!!!!!!!!! My Polestar runner beans and Stanley French beans have been struck by Halo Blight! Both lots of seed were freshly bought this year from a UK supplier. I have never grown English Runners of French beans here before. They appeared to be growing so well and healthily - then BAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have pulled all affected plants and will not compost them. I have read that it is transmitted from infected seeds. Has anyone else had this problem?

Very unusual that both lots had it. It's usually carried by seed. Did you soak both packs together? If one seed has it you could have transferred the problem to all the others. I've never had it and never seen it on a plant either.
I have read that it's best not to plant beans in the same spot for a couple of years too.

I did not soak any of the seeds. Both packets came from the same supplier.

Are you 100% sure it's halo blight?

(I find it very difficult to differentiate between various fungal problems on leaves)

All affected plants are now in a plastic bag ready for the rubbish bins - I dare not compost them. The spots on the leaves were surrounded by a "Halo" which is exactly as it was described in my veggie gardening book. I will buy some more seeds when in the UK later this week and get planting again when I come home.

Well that doesn't look like halo blight to me. Halo blight has a yellow ring around the outside. Any grapes have any ideas?
It looks more like rust to me. Have you had any wet/humid weather?

It doesn't look particularly halo like to me either.

I guess it could be rust. Did these spots go yellow and then turn brown? That's what rust does on my beans. Botrytis infections on other plants also look like this, but not sure of the susceptibility of runner beans to such disease. It's only been a broad bean problem for me in the past. I also assume the Spanish climate means things develop a bit different there than over here.

one day the spots were not there, then BINGO! All plants are up now and in the rubbish bins. The spots have got a "halo" around them if you look closely. I will buy some more seeds when in UK tomorrow and start again when I get back home. Scarlet - are you joking? Have we had wet weather? LOL! I have kept things well watered though.
