Is there any long term detrimental effect on young plants whose growth has been checked due to being placed in a too cool environment. Are they a weaker plant or do they just mature later in the season?

some plants will just sit and sulk after a check, some will grow on and perhaps bolt. It's always best to get them growing and keep them growing to avoid such problems. -
I put some French beans out too early last year. They germinated fine outdoors, but then caught a cold snap. They sat and sulked, and never did grow. The ones I planted a fortnight later overtook them ~ the early ones eventually turned yellow and died.

I had the same experience as TS with the beans. It really does pay to wait a bit longer for the correct weather conditions if you can as the later sowings/plantings invariably do much better if their growth is unchecked.
Last year I sowed some cukes too early and they almost died then recovered only to get to the fruiting stage then just keel over. I guess they had just been too stressed at the wrong time.Comment
