    Growmore question.

    I've bought a 5kg packet of growmore to save myself money on compost next year. Basically I'm just using the same compost from this year and adding some growmore and pot ash from the fire. I was wondering, how much growmore do you add to a 10 litre pot? The guidelines on the pack only work in metres squared and say nothing about how much should be added to pots. Any other advice would also be welcome about using this.

    Scoot, it would really depend
    a) what you intend using the compost for i.e seed compost or for potting on etc.

    b)what you intend growing

    For what it's worth, for growing roots - carrots and parsnips, I use a whole 12 ozs of fertiliser(not growmore) in 3 x 2 gallons buckets full.

      Sorry I should have said. This will be for growing tomatoes in. Potting compost.

        A litre is the same as 1000 cubic centimetres.
        A cubic metre is 1000 litres.

        As our American friends would say, do the math.

        Or in terms of a standard wine bottle: 0.75 litres =750ml = 750 cm3

          I use it all the time, find no need for accurate measurements.

          You are only using it as a basic 7-7-7 fertiliser, I mix my old compost it a 35ltr trug and to be honest just throw a handful in, I like to mix it a couple of weeks before use to allow time for it to release some nutrients.

          Don't forget this is a basic fertiliser and you will need to use specific fertilisers to get the best crop.

            I've struggled with this too. The guidelines on fertilizer are usually so much per square metre.

            A twelve inch pot is about 700 square centimeters on the top, which is a fourteenth of a square metre.

            So should I use a fourteenth of the "per square metre" amount? It doesn't seem like enough. So I end up just putting a handful in.

              I use blood fish & bone & use the same handful looks enough method of calculation in my pots.

                What other fertiliser would anyone recommend for tomato growing then, as well as growmore. I grow loads of tomatoes and don't want to have to splash out on loads of new compost every year.

                      For Toms once they are in their final pots I use Miracle Grow for green growth, useful for most other plants as well. When the first truss sets I change to tomorite again very useful for other plants.

                        Yeah, i always use a tomato fertiliser of some sort once they get established.

                          I also look at the back of the box and then use my hands
                          I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

                            I have been using chicken pellets,a handful, each spring, and it seems to work...

                              Do you mix it in with the compost or just sprinkle over the top of the compost?
