Are you concerned about cross pollination?

2-3 feet as the tomatillo grows really big.

Hi all I can say is that I have grown tomatillos for the past couple of years next to tomatoes and I've had no problems. However, as Zazen says they do get quite big so will need space.

How Do I Prevent Tomatoes from Cross-pollinating? - check out this link, and I now see that unless a tomato plant has an "exerted stigma" then it may only need a 20-25 foot seperation barrier.

I plan to plant my tomato plants and tomatillo plants about 15 feet apart with some heavy pollinating plants inbetween. Thanks.

cross pollination won't be an issue unless you save the sees for planting next year ....... dunno if they cross pollinate anyway

Me again. I've just done a search on the internet which says that although tomatillo and tomato are in the same family they do not share the same genus or species. Apparently they will only cross-pollinate if they are of the same genus or species not just because they are in the same family. Check out this link

                Hope this helps

Some of the heritage type toms cross pollinate because the stigma sticks out of the tube of petals surrounding it. However, having tried to cross pollinate tomatoes deliberately I can say it's jolly hard to do with the modern ones. I 'did' about a dozen flowers last year and only managed to get one to take.

you are right I must plant my tomato varieties about 10 feet apart(because they are mainly self pollination, and my tomatillo seed can be planted next to my tomato plants. Taking into account proper row/plant spacing.

In blissful ignorance that it was even a possibility, I've grown them right next to each other with no problems.

Is the Tomatillo not more closely related to Cape Gooseberry (Physallis) than the Tomato (Solanum)??????

Should be interesting for me as I'm growing tomatoes, cape gooseberries and tomatillo's this year!

I had all three in a greenhouse in 2008. The tomatoes are big, the caope gooseberry bigger and the tomatillo are mahoosive.

Only 4 plants for me this year.
