im fed up with slugs eating my radish that are in the ground, so im going to grow them in containers. what is the best medium to grow them in. i have multi purpose compost, 5 yr old horse manure and a bag of focus top soil.

hindsight is a wonderful thing but foresight is a whole lot better -
I have mine just in compost in a container.. If I had your stuff at my disposal I'd put a bit of compost at the bottom, a thin slither of manure and then a mixture of topsoil and compost. I am not a pro though - wait for further advice.
Do you not have barbed wire for the perimeter as well?

Multicompost is fine.They dont need feeding or anything.Just keep well watered.Comment

I think if you add manure, they might put on a lot of foliage at the expense of the roots.Comment

Hawthorns, I just use multi-purpose - it does the job. I sprinkle horticultural sand/grit or crushed egg shells on the ground after sowing the radish seeds to stop slug attack. I just top up every now and again. Ones in ground so far ok. Trough ones too small for little nibbles as yet

I have mine in containers of multi-purpose with copper tape round the pots. They have been untouched by slugs who have decimated the marigolds growing nearby.Comment

Those in pots are in multi-purpose compost with an outer ring of coffee grounds and an inner one of crushed egg shells (double protection!!). So far NO SLUGS. I've used the same technique with those in my raised beds - with the same result! Yipee.
A good beginning is half the work.

I grew mine in a trough but the only trouble with pots and containers is that they provide perfect living conditions for the snails and slugs hiding under the rims and sides - with food on the doorstep.
I gave up fighting, I just eat the ones that haven't been grazed.Gentlemen! - you can't fight in here...this is the War Room!Comment
