Growing potatoes in canvas grow bag

Outside the greenhouse at this time of year.

Makes no difference whether they are bought as seed potatoes or not. Any spuds that form shoots (chits) will grow and should produce a reasonable harvest.

I pretty much only ever use old tatties from the supermarket and they grow fine. I have read before that they can get blight easier but I have never really had this problem. I do generally but quite a few potatoes in the tub though to get the maximum out of the space.

I'm having an experiment this year, last year I used Charlotte potatoes from the supermarket and this year I've bought Charlotte seed potatoes. It will be interesting to see if there's any difference in the harvest as the seed potatoes cost a fair bit more than the potatoes from the supermarket.

I've found by putting more spuds in a tub you tend to get the same weight harvest, but smaller potatoes, which is okay for early new potatoes but growing maincrops for things like jacket spuds, I'm comparing putting less in a tub (1 per 30l tub) to see if I get some big spuds.

Good to do a comparison but hopefully the weather will be different (less rain and more sun), so it'll be difficult to do a direct comparison.

I'm planting 1 per flower bucket and 3 to a potato growbag thingy. I'm fed up with earthing up the bucket ones so I'm going to mulch them with newspaper!

I am with Paul on this one, my new potatoes get two per bucket, main crop 4 to a 80 ltr dustbin. That way I get some nice chippers and bakers.

Yip I agree it'll be hard to do a like for like comparison as last year my new potatoes would have been not far off ready by now, this year they're a lng way off, I suspect at least July. It was far too cold to put them out and they didn't even think about growing until early April.

So a little bit of feedback as to my potato harvests, as discussed above it's not a like for like comparison with last year weather wise but here goes anyway. Last year I used supermarket potatoes and the harvests were of average size and all of the potatoes were healthy, this year I used seed potatoes from a garden centre and the harvests were slightly higher but a small few of the tubers had potato scab. I understand that there are a lot of factors that can contribute to this, including the soil being dry, which yes I agree it has been drier this year than last. Next year I think I might buy a very small amount of seed potatoes and grow them alongside supermarket potatoes just out of curiosity to see if there is a difference.
