They should be ok as long as you put some holes in the bottom for drainage.

I'm going to try growing carrots in one of my black recycling boxes this year as they've failed two years running up at the lottie. (Nasty soapy taste - don't know the cause)

My recycling box looks exactly like your container except that it does have holes drilled in the bottom.

Definitely with holes in the bottom. I've had lovely carrots, radishes, beetroot in boxes like that.

Yes, you can use almost anything as a container to grow in so long as you make some drainage holes :-) Flower buckets from Morrisons are a big fave on here

Only a beginner here, but could the transparency of the box not be an issue?

Spuds grown in Tesco square flower pots with holds drilled around the outside 1" from the base, then filled with chippings and compost

It's always worth checking out Wyevales used pots and boxes bin. I got 30-40 biggish pots from there last year. Similar new ones inside were £1 a pop.

                          Thanks

I'd imagine that 10 millimetre holes about 3 inches apart should do the trick.

Probably worth putting some broken crocks in the bottom to help with drainage as well when you fill it.

Mustard, if you are worried you can always line the container with black plastic.
