One of my plants produced some berries this year and the foliage was so thick from all the other plants that I was able to put it out of reach of my daughter so I left them be.
They feel off about a month ago and I collected them all up. The variety the fruits came from was Red Emma.
I cut one open and extracted the seeds, and left the others to ripen, which I read is what you are supposed to do. I wanted to do one right away though, in the hope that it would germinate, as I wanted to get a plant growing now in August so that it might produce some small tubers by the end of the year, allowing me to plant them in the spring to get a proper crop.
I planted all the seeds around three weeks ago and got nothing. I thought maybe they needed time to mature in the ripening fruit, or maybe my beries were no good for some reason. Anyway, today I notice I have two very small seedlings growing. So it looks like at least some of the seeds are viable after all!
My hope is to get a few different types to try next year, and then narrow down to one or two new varieties that are decent to grow on in future seasons. We'll see.

. I knew that Desiree had Duke of York somewhere in its lineage and was hoping for a few white spuds?
but they were all purple skinned and without the taste or the cropping ability of 'Proppa' Desiree spuds.
