    Growing garlic in containers

    Hi,

    I'm growing everything in containers as our new garden is completely slabbed. I was reading up about garlic and wondered how easy is it to grow in containers?

    So far I have grown strawberries, rhubarb, runner beans, tomatoes, french beans and a lettuce (cats ruined the rest!) all in containers and it's all going well so just looking for little tips to help me along my way.

    I grow the majority of my garlic at the lottie but this year I had a few bulbs left over and have put them in two of those plastic vegetable bags from Wilkinsons on the patio at home. They've done well and are almost ready to harvest. The bulbs are smaller than the ones at the lottie but will still be ok. Give it a go later in the year, they don't need much looking after.

      Thanks ladylottie. This is my first proper year at growing my own and I'm still on a huge learning curve!

      A I right in thinking I can plant a clove of garlic around September/October time? Will garlic grow in a more shady area?

        September might be a bit early. I plant mine end of October/early November and it does well. Not grown garlic in containers but I grow lots of onions in old fish boxes so I can't see why it shouldn't thrive.

          I have found that garlic need a comtainer at least 9 inches deep if thats any help.

            mine is growing fine in containts .... i have normal garlic in window boxes / troughs, about 8-10 cloves per trough, each trough being maybe 18" - 24" long, 6"-8" deep .... i have elephant garlic in 8" and 10" pots and it's really using up the space in those pots ....

              I had some extra's last year that were planted (on shortest day) in pots & have the same sort of growth as those in the soil .............

                I have garlic and onions in large bags, see link. Have pulled about half the garlic and a few onions. Most of the remaining onions are larger that those I grew last year.

                    I have some in individual pots (probably 8-10" ones at a guess), they are fairly deep too. I've no idea how successful they will be as first year of doing it but the foliage is looking good if thats anything to go by.

                      i have my garlic growing in old builders buckets,with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage,filled with garden soil and planted up last september,i mixed some chicken pellets into the soil to start them off and look like they will be ready soon,i put 3 in each pot and it seems to work well so good luck with it...
