  • Green Manure - Can I grow carrots in the bed following green manure?

Hi, I have been thinking about using the green manure called Field Bean in one of my raised beds which was used for brassicas this last season to give my raised beds some cover overwinter. (as the caterpillars ate all my cabbages!)
I have looked into it that I can sow it from Sept to Dec and then dig into the soil in feb or springtime and the field bean fixes nitrogen in the soil.

My question is can I follow this type of green manure with sowing carrots straight into this bed in springtime? Is the nitrogen too much for carrots? or will it be ok.

Any help will be good as this is the first time I have thought about using green manure.

I would try it if I had the seeds, although if you are concerned there are plenty of other green manures that don't fix nitrogen and may be a better bet? I've got some limnanthes seedlings coming along, to plant in assorted places, and also a packet of mixed GM that I intend to sow ASAP in the bed where the spuds will go next spring.
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

I think what's worried you is that carrots don't appreciate freshly manured beds. The type of manure referred to is usually horse, pig, sheep, chicken poo etc . I would have thought that plant-based green manures wouldn't cause any problems but I've never tried it myself.

I would follow your caterpillar eaten brassica's with jap onions, garlic or shallots and grow your legumes in the same bed after them.

Carrots could follow your spring cabbage or PSB in another bed!

It's not really a good idea to have carrots in a nitrogen rich bed unless you like eating carrot tops!

We've got barley growing where we plan to put our carrots next year. It's the 1st year we've done it(I had a major panic that we'd done lots of taking goodness out of the soil & not enough putting back!A kindly chap at the lottie not only advised that what we do, but also gave me sufficient grain to cover the area!)
