    Good year for garlic?

    My garlic seems to be doing particularily well this year, both the GC bought 'proppa' garlic and the Tesco's bought stuff.
    I grew a lot indoors over the winter in large pots but the stuff thats growing outdoors is doing well also.
    Its only about one in every six years I get a decent crop so with another five years to wait I'd better make the most of it.

    Hope its been a good year for yours?

    Mine look nice and strong as well, with no 'spring-onion style' ones

      It's my first year growing it, but a few people have mistaken them for leeks, which I take as a good sign.

        Mine looks very strong above ground too..
        Hopefully replicated below ground where it is most important!!
        I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

          Mine are looking good at the moment, first year of growing so quite pleased with the apparent results.

          I planted these mid February so assuming they are a long way from harvest but approx 50cm tall

            Three quarters of mine look brilliant - very big and strong. The other quarter (well it's only one row really) looks awful.

            I think it might be the variety (unknown) - I picked it up at our local potato day. My Solent Wight and Marco are the strong ones.

              I planted mine back in October/November and have grown tall and strong. The foilage is now quite yellow and last week I lifted a bulb to have a nosey at how they are looking. The bulb was still quite small but I could see the seperate cloves had formed.
              I know it's still a bit early to harvest my garlic, so will the bulbs continue to grow until I'm ready to harvest them?
              If it comes from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don't!!

                You should be fine yes, one of the last things they do is swell up before being ready.

                    My first year too, and some of mine are leek-sized. No idea what the are doing below the soil - trying to remain patient!

                    ^trying to get a photo with my thumb (normal sized thumb I think) as a scale comparison. This is one of my big ones, you can see more of a range in the background. It's November planted French Thermidorm.

                    I kept extras in a pot too but they are small - too many in the pot methinks. Hoping to use them as wet garlic for fun.

                      I have never had such thick stalks, reading through the comments, , 'leek like' is a good description. I also hope the harest matches the strong top growth. I planted mine mid-November, a bit later than usual, it's normally half term week.
                      I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
                      Now a little Shrinking Violet.

                          Mine are doing well too. Massive great big stalks, the sort that I have to wrap both hands around. That said, I won't officially crow til I dig them up and can have a butchers at the bulb. That reminds me. Need to go check my books to see when I can harvest them.

                              Unfortunately, mine now have rust and they had been looking pretty good til now. I have cut off the infected leaves and the two worst nearest my onion bed I cut down altogether. Concerned it might spread to my onions which are in the next bed. Up til now I have lost a third of my onion sets planted in the autumn (but we did have those two cold winters). Haven't lost many onions this winter but fingers crossed they don't get rust too.
