  • Good value onion and shallot sets.............

If you can................... go to a garden centre that sell them loose by the kilo! I bought some Setton sets myself this morning which i hand picked.
I always go for the smaller ones as the larger ones usually spit into two or run to seed.

A lage brown paper bag filled to the brim cost me £1.85.................which I though was a bargain.
I would reckon it was the equivalent of 2 or 3 of those pre packed jobbies which usually cost £1.99 to £2.99 each!

I wish I'd seen this before I bought my loose shallot sets on Friday. This is my first attempt at growing them and faced with a shelf of loose shallots I picked the bigger ones Though, saying that, they didn't cost me a lot (picked 20 yellow moon and 20 red sun), so I could go back and get some of the diddy ones

I usually find that big shallots usually produce loads of little shallots whereas small shallots usually produce 2 or three big shallots..............

Planting big shallots is fine though if you are wanting smal shallots for pickling!

Looks like I'll be pickling then I'd better start saving more jars, I bought 40 sets.
