  • Good tomato to grow for making sauces?

I don't like to eat raw tomatoes but love all varieties of cooked tomato sauces etc.
which variety would be a good one for me to grow? maybe a plum type?

I understand that true plum tomatoes are really only best for sauces, passatta that sort of thing - I don't know if its to do with the acidity level that makes them not so ideal for eating raw.

Sungold is quite a prolific normal tomato, grows happily outdoors all summer and has the sweetest tasting fruits. Its very versatile and makes a super sauce.

I am trying Roma this year. Tried it last year too but not much sucess with any of my toms last year It is a plum type and supposedly has hardly any seeds so good for cooking and sauces etc. I have loads of seeds if you fancy some let me know.

Ms Carrot likes Pink Brandywines for making sauce, although I'm partial to them sliced in sarnies, very very tasty especially if they get some sunshine and not many seeds inside.

Last year i grew 'san marzano' and had lovely huge tommies - with barely any seeds and quite a 'dry' tommie so excellent for cooking with.

This year i am going to grow san marzano again and also scatolone - another type of plum tommie. Check out the seeds of italy website - i got lots of ideas from there and they are really good value for money!

have grown Roma, San Marzano and Orange Banana for sauces. all produced wellp Plenty of toms and its hard to say which would be my favourite if I had to decide.

I wish you lot would pack it in............there's two extra tomato varieties I've had to add this week i.e San Marzano and Amish Paste!

I grew 8 types of tom two years ago and whittled it down to just 4 last year. I may even exceed 8 varieties this year at the rate I'm going!

San Marzano - absolutely the king for sauce.

I'm going to try Roma this year, so it better be good!

San Marzano and Roma have proved to be both prolific and ideal for sauces, being a bit drier than salad tomatoes.

Pink brandywine are ok but a lot less productive.

This year I am growing both Amish paste and Urbikany (Real seeds) for sauce tomatoes as well as roma. Both come highly recommended.
