  • A good method to sow carrots/peas?

My soil at the allotment seems to cap quite badly. I think it's too late to sort it out this year- isn't?

Therefore, I'm going to try my luck and sow seeds and hope for the best, then sort it out over the winter.

I'm planning on getting some carrots and peas in over the next month or so. Can you tell me of this is a good method?:

-Dig and aerate the soil as much as possible.

-Make a drill around 1" deep, line it with compost.

-Sow seeds (thinly for carrots) and then fill the drill up with compost up to the level of the rest of the soil.

-For the carrots, have alternate rows of onions and carrots.

    How is that sounding?

Is it possible to position only 1 carrot seed at 2" intervals to prevent the need for thinning completely?

Also, do I need to tie the pea plants to the canes, or will they find their own way?

    Thanks........again!

yes, sounds like a plan for your carrots.

Peas won't climb canes ... they twine, not climb. therefore, you need to provide them with either twigs, string or netting.

      Ah, I see.

The plot I have taken over has a structure already built, and it has dead peas wrapped around the canes.

Are you sure they are peas wrapped around canes, when I took mine over I found these woody things wrapped around canes & in netting(barrier fence) which had been there some time, was advised they were climbing beans which had been left.

Myself, I'd sow the carrots at about 1\4 inch to allow for losses and wildlife otherwise you may get a very thin row - you can just cut the tops off any unwanted ones when they grow the first true leaves. You could always use a flat spade to make a "V" in the unprepared ground, fill it with a mix of sieved earth or compost and sand and sow on top of that and then cover with a thin layer of the above like I do as I have stony soil.

You could start your peas in compost in a length of guttering, then yoiu scrape a traench in the soil where you are gonna plant your peas, and slide the whole thing in.
