gold in with lettuce? ;)

ok i know ive cheated slightly well only with these they jumped out at me so i had to buy ok but when i got home and re planted them into troughs i noticed this gold stuff surrounding them ,anyone any ideas?? ive not seen this before and im guessing ive not stuck gold lol hehe

It's vermiculite that was mixed with the compost the seedlings grew in.

Yep - what Martin said. My OH thought it was gold when I pulled up my thyme plant too
