  • Give Rogues a chance

I found one rogue bean amongst my Heritage Seed Library crop of Soldier beans last year and instead of roguing it out and getting rid, I saved the seeds to grow this year. I have some lovely results.

These a the best of my seeds. I want them for a dried winter crop so this is the stage I would be saving them. There's a dark bean with a pale speckled pattern and a white bean with black markings. Because I have a geology degree and you never quite shake it off, I want to call the dark bean Porphyry if I can get a true line going.

I'm looking for suggestions for the white with black markings one. I can only think of Old Speckled Hen - either I watch too much Dave or I'm hoping for Brewery sponsorship! Bit of a long name for a short bean though!
There's a pic of Speckled with its mum Soldier for size and colour comparison. What would you call it?
So don't chuck out anything unusual. It could lead to something truly wonderful (ok I'm gushing, but I'm rather excited just now!)

Well I can't pronounce it but this is what I thought when I saw the handful of 'splashed' beans on the far rhs.

    Rorschach bean

ps I think card 1 (above) looks like a piggy and its reflection!

I think I need to get out more!

pps look forward to hearing more about your new beans Flum, what do they taste like?

Tasting is the next step SBP. I have only small quantities so I'll cook a few each of the less patterned beans and save the prettiest for growing on next year.

Hmm. Rorschach. You could lose yourself for hours trying to think what the pattern resembled! (and then be certified!)

I've got the same, with a few rogues from last year that I have yet to name....and some lovely little rogues from this year that I'm collecting and growing on next summer.

I like the Rorschach idea though.

Perhaps we should have a rogue swap once we have a decent amount saved?

Oddly enough (and somewhat connected) my first thought was "Inkspot"

ps, my first thought about the "inkspot" was a wolf face on.

I'm not getting sucked into your ink-spot psycho-wotnots , but the beans could do worse than be call 'silhouette'. One of the beans (nearly bottom left) has a lovely tree outline on it.

Isn't that the name of a 'feminine hygiene' product?

Maybe it doesn't matter as so many words have more than one meaning anyway - for example I find out today from another thread that Love Canal is a small town near Niagara Falls......
