  • Giant courgette plants!

I planted some courgette seeds in pots on my windowsill at the start of April. They are now pretty big and growing at an alarming rate. I don't think I can plant them out until maybe end of May (I'm in Edinburgh), but they're going to be flipping HUGE by then! Did I plant too early?

I planted six seeds and all are doing brilliantly, but have since learned that one plant is enough for a small family. Ho hum. I guess we'll be eating lots of courgettes this year...

Glenisita - I've done exactly the same thing... the plants have become a little rampant and I haven't prepared the ground for them yet!!

I might stick them in bigger pots and give them a feed... They start to struggle in small pots as they drain the nutrients out of the compost so quickly.

"One plant is enough for a small family", well I think I have over done it then.

I have 15 Jaguar F1's, 15 Tristar and 6 Tiger Marrows all coming along nicely. They do appear to be growing quickly and I have moved them into bigger pots now so hopefully they will keep in them ok until near the end of this month. I might put some out a little earlier.

Thanks JimmerG for the info about the draining of nutrients, I might consider a liquid feed later on this month then

Last year i grew 2 plants in large containers, that was more than enough for my family of four.... plus grandparents.

I remember thinking to my self that this year i would only grow the one plant....... i've got 3 in!! there will be way too many for us but i plan to make up a fruit/veg box for one of my neighbours who kindly gave me 2 huge solid wood planters, some big normal plastic planters and a few tyres.

Thanks for your replies. I've just put mine in bigger pots today too, and will start feeding them. I guess we'll be doing a lot of pickling this year!

Edwardo, with 36 courgettes you'll be able to open a market stall

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I went a bit mad this year too, bought a packet of 6 different varieties and sowed 6 of each, all germinated then sowed all 22 of the free ones with last months mag! Fortunately have friends who want plants, will probably sell some at local country market and have really good recipes for chutney and a scrumptious courgette cake, will gladly pass them on if anyone wants.

i have realised that somehow i have mixed courgette and cucumber together. can any one tell me how to tell them apart, seeds are about 1 to 2 inches high at the moment.i think i put courgette in the pots when some of the cucumbers failed to germinate by mistake. courgette seeds packet has been opened and used but i cant find any pots with courgettes labelled up.

We grew four plants for two of us last year in a polytunnel - just as well we love courgette soup as we have just used the last one (soup)
                  out of the deep freeze.
I think three plants this year !

You sowed too early, yes. They grow like stink once May comes.
I sowed mine last week, and they're not showing yet.

I grew two plants last year ('Zuccini Hybrid') and certainly didn't have a glut... so this year I've sown about a trillion to be on the safe side

I planted three in pots some time ago (1/3/9 according to my records) and they did really well..... so I put them into the garden a couple of weeks ago..... since then they've done nowt. Slugs seem to like them though!!!

I read some where last year that 2 plants were enough for a family and if you plant more then it becomes embarassing but didnt take any notice, thinking it could never be embarassing, and planted 10 green and 10 yellow plants! Guess what, it was right. Courgettes just keep on comming, the more you pick the more come along. There were far to many for us and i couldnt give them away and was sick of courgette soup. In the end i had to put most of them on the compost heap. This year i have one green and one yellow plant in a wheel barrel and one more yellow in my greenhouse ready to go along side the sweetcorn.
