  • Giant Cauli!!

Should make enough cauliflower cheese for everyone on the Vine!

Giant cauliflower weighs in at 27.5kg - Telegraph

Cauliflower ... eeuuurrrggh. What a waste. Just think of how many nice tasting veggies could have been grown in that space instead

... and how on earth do you go about growing, and more specifically harvesting, a 21ft beetroot and 19ft parsnip

I love cauli too bit have no interest in growing one that size. Wonder what it tastes like. Think I'll stick to my more manageable sized crops

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I read a book by Bernard Lavery(think that was his name) who in his day was the man for giant veg. He grew his long veg in lengths of roof guttering.

I know that to us it seems a waste of time but if the guy enjoys it I'm happy for him to get on with it. I've met Peter Glazebrook and he really is a very nice quiet unassuming man.

The Cauli will have been grown in the best of composts in the most favourable conditions. Mr Glazebrook's wife according to the article was busy chopping it up and freezing it. As he has grown big uns before, I think it safe to assume his wife wouldn't waste her time freezing it if it wasn't palatable.

A great gardening achievement. Respect to him.

(Is he a member of this forum?)

Though I too was wondering what the texture and flavour of something so outsize would be ....

I would be happy if mine grow big enough for one meal.

Love cauli raw and tossed in hot garlic butter

Further to my post above, I was correct with the name Bernard Lavery. The book I referred to is available from Amazone(used) at £0.01 + postage £2.80. I've just bought a copy http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grow-Giant-V.../dp/0004127714
