  • Which Garlic??

    Morning all

I'm just perusing the many seed catalogues (again!!) and trying to decide which variety of garlic to try. I had Early Purple Wight this year and although I got some good big bulbs, I am finding its not storing massively well and it doesnt have a really good garlicky taste. I did like the fact it was out of the ground in June, however, and I could use the ground for something else!

What is everyone else growing and what have you found to be particularly good?
    Thanks!
If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!

I grow Solent Wight, it stores well right through to the next season. I will be replanting cloves from this year's growth and haven't needed to buy new garlic ever since I have grown it.

Think I am going to have a go with Picardy Wight Garlic this year, I grew Solent Wight the last couple of years and although it keeps well it hasn't flourished with relatively small bulbs, the blurb from The Garlic Farm says 'it originates from the Picardy province in Northern France, and is adapted to cooler, wetter conditions, growing anywhere in the UK that has proved a challenge to other garlic types and that it is best planted from December / January, similar to Solent Wight, but grows more slowly & finishes up to two weeks later'.

I have heavy clay soils which have been rather wet over the last couple of years! so hopefully this variety will be just the ticket. I think Marshalls seed are going to sell it as well.

Good luck with which ever one you choose

I couldn't decide either,as this is my first attempt at growing garlic i got 17 bulbs from wyevale for 50p and the garlic collection from the IOW garlic farm at £22.So hopefully something I like will grow in the soil I have.I will then keep a couple of bulbs for next year

I grew solent wight last/this year and have been very pleased with the results, large bulbs and is so far keeping very well and has a lovely flavour, I will be growing this one again using saved bulbs.

I've always grown supermarket garlic and never had any problems with it, and it's cheaper than seed garlic, so it would be easy to plant some alongside seed garlic, and see how they compare
Even cheaper, we have one proper greengrocer left in the town. A few days ago I asked if he had any broken up garlic bulbs or that was too old or scruffy to sell. Called this morning and got a huge bagful for free, so I put some money in one of his charity boxes
I'll have to pick them over a bit, but there's enough for half the allotment site!

I've grown Cristo every year since I started (sometimes known as Wight Cristo) and it's great. It's suitable for Autumn or Spring planting, decent sized bulbs and stores really well.

(I must say, it's starting to get on my nerves that the Garlic Farm are sticking 'Wight' onto the name of most of the varieties.)

I'm growing Purple Moldovan Wight, Music (supermarket bulb) and Iberian Wight this year. I'm tempted to get some Solent Wight too as it's supposed to be really good for storing.

Eggsactly.....it grew well so a good mix suits us down to the ground - we've decided on eating 1/3, giving 1/3 away and planting out the rest......next year if all goes well everyone we know will be getting garlic in their christmas stockings.....

Hi, I grew Solent Wight and it did very well indeed for me - really pleased with the results and have created a very flashy looking garlic plait. Would definitely grow the same again.
