I planted garlic at the end of last year and was reasonably successful with it. I did have problems with some sort of rot thing but managed to retrieve prob half of the crop luckily. I think from what I have read that I can't plant garlic or onions in that spot again for a while (onions had the same problem) and was thinking about planting garlic in pots or troughs this year to save the soil. Does anyone know if this is successfull,would it survive the winter any tips? I love garlic!!

Most if not all Autumn planted garlic requires cold for proper growth, you shouldnt have any problem in pots -
Lesley, I did some in pots and troughs, planted October last year and harvested a few weeks ago. Just left them out on the patio the whole time and they were fine.There are 10 kinds of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't.Comment

I start using it as "green garlic" in early June but it has not been ready to harvest and dry till late July. Some types may be earlier or even later.History teaches us that history teaches us nothing. - HegelComment

Do you have to buy special bulbs from mail order or can you just use a supermarket baught bulb
My wife has a couple in the larder so would they be ok

John, my first year of garlic growing I just used a shop bought bulb and split it, planting every clove. Since then I have only used my own garlic, and replant my stuff.
I find that they are maybe a little bit smaller than the shop bought bulbs, but just as tasty.
Last year I planted the cloves in pots around the end of October (dont have my diary with me) and left them until they were decent sized plants, and then planted them out in the spaces in the onion bed.
Only had 1 that didnt grow, and I think that one had been repeatedly pulled out by birds, harvested them on the longest day, and they are now dried out and ready to use.
I've never used green garlic, but intend to plant more this year (I love garlic too) and will use some as green, leaving the rest to dry out.
They wont be grown in the same bed as last year, I havent had problems but dont want to tempt fate, but am looking forward to more garlic again next year, all provided by one single shop bought bulb.Bob Leponge
