They do reckon garlic should be planted around now, so it gets a cold spell. Mine is shooting in cell trays in the cold greenhouse, ready to go onto the lottie next weekend.

Mine only arrive in the post today (ordered from Dobies) and it says can be planted successionally from October to January.
I've got 4 different types to try, so am looking forward to it!

We planted ours last year on Halloween, and got bumper crops, so are planning on doing the same again this year with the 2 varieties we have!

they say plant on the shortest day harvest on the longest but i would think you could plant anytime in the next couple of months and still get a good result.

I have a variety called Solent Wight which they (garlic farm) reckon does a bit better in Spring. I planted the cloves from one bulb yesterday in a 8" deep fish box. I shall leave the others till Feb I think (unless, of course, anyone here knows better.)

Well I've just planted my Solent Wight (in pots) having been advised that it can be planted now

It is despatched for both autumn and spring plantings, so either they are slightly different strains or it is flexible.
yoanbob - that is the advice for shallots rather than garlic, I believe. However, it is not bad advice for some of the varieties.

If planting now in a pot, will garlic need protection over the winter or should it stand okay? Oh, and same question for onions, sorry!

Hi Moggssue,
I don't provide protection for my garlic, they can take it ( the frost will only damage the top but the roots will survive and new shoots will be form later on spring ).I don't know about onions, sorry...

If they are meant for overwintering (what used to be called Japnese onions) they will be fine. If they aren't intended to be planted in autumn (it will say on the pack) then leave them till spring.

I got my variety pack from the Garlic Farm (IOW) and planted half of them last weekend - the other half to be planted in Spring.
Didn't know about the shortest day and longest day thing... shortest day is my birthday! Seems most recommend October though! Not deepest December?!

On the subject of garlic....i planted mine 2 weeks ago and followed instructions of planting 3 inches deep, however recent gardening magazines have advised just below the surface! Will I get any garlic if planted too deeply?

It's confusing! Mine arrived today, so I planted it today. Checking Dr Hessayon, he says plant in March.
Also, I had conflicting advice on planting depth, so I did half at 2 inches deep and half at an inch deep. We'll see!~ my paintings ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ my photos ~

The other year I planted towards the end of winter and the garlic was OK.
Last year I planted around now and this time it was excellent. So I will be planting this time again.

I'm going to plant mine in pots at the weekend, so will report back in due course. Sorry, that'll be too late for those asking the question now, but at least we'll know for next year!!
