  • Garlic....Where did it go wrong...?

    Hi All,

Around Feb time I planted out two types of garlic, Isle of Wight Giant and Marco.

Initially both seemed to get off to a good start, but whilst IofW has continues to do well and I have high hopes, the Marco soon died back, however I was suprised to find the buls still intact and seemingly fine.

I have left them in and I check the odd bulb every now and then and they seem fine, they just refuse to grow.

    As usual any ideas?

Cheers for now and thanks in advance,

    Noggy

You're not alone - I've had the same problem. Planted two varieties in the same bed and although one is going great guns (can't remember what is was) Marco has just stopped and sulked. It sprouted but gave up...

Should I just leave it and hope for the best or take it out and compost it?

I put my garlic in last sept/oct [the ones not in the trial] and they will be ready in a month or so. That's 9-10 months.

If it has sprouted, then give it a chance. Unless you are desperate for space, or they have white rot [unearth one and see if there is a fuzzy white mould at the bottom of the bulb], then I'd leave it.

          Hi All,

Thanks for that, glad to see I am not alone Pootle, I think Paul may be right, patience is the answer, and thanks zazen happily there is no sign of white rot.

As they seem fine I think I will leave them in and see if another cold spell this coming winter will trigger them.

          Thanks once again.
