Garlic trouble- help

    Garlic trouble- help

    Hi, Ive just joined and have been reading other posts (hence the time of this message). I was hoping someone could give me some advice with garlic growing.
    I planted my garlic in October and thought it should be ready now. I pulled one to find that it looked likea leek, there is no bulb at all on my regular garlic and very small modules on the elephant garlic, also the elephant garlic has seed heads which i took off recently before they opened.
    Do you think they will form bulbs if i leave them in for another month or two?

    No, I can't grow garlic either!

    You need to wait until the foliage has yellowed and collapsed before they're ready anyway

      If you slice the garlic you should see the formations of the cloves near the base.....it will need these last 2-3 months to bulb up properly.

        Thank you for your help, I thought there would already be a small bulb. I will leave them a few months and check again when the leaves have turned yellow.

          If you planted in October I suspect they will be turning in fairly soon. Normally mine are ready towards the end of June. They are just starting to yellow now. After a cold winter should be no problem with clove formation. Too deep? to dry? or poor soil? are the first questions to ask yourself. Garlic grows a bit anywhere but not well in poor hungry weedy soil.

          'pulling' ....mmm...I trust referred to easing it up out of the lovely rich loose loam with a fork and gently removing the bulb?...rather than yanking it from the baked clay?

            I sliced one of the garlic leeks which I 'pulled' up and there was clove formation there, the leaves are still green with only the odd lower one turning yellow here and there, so I will take another look in about 6 weeks time.
            The ground is good and weed free, so not much else I can do apart from wait.

            Thanks for your advice again....no doubt I will be back with other problems as this is my first attempt at growing my own veg.....this gardening lark takes some patience.
            On a positive note, I have picked my first two cucumbers last week and the tomatoes, peppers and chilies are almost ready too...

              I didnt plant mine until end of jan so I expect to pull mine sometime aroud august or september.
