  • Garlic rust and compost

Oh wise and wondrous collective. Just dug up the garlic, very average this year, but it'll do. However it has quite a dose of rust this year (probably the worst I've had). Not affecting the bulbs but do I compost the stems etc. or do I donate them to the council compost heap? My reading is that it requires living tissue to survive (so would be OK to compost) but may have dormant spores (so not good).

Is it a case of better safe than sorry?

They're currently drying out in the greenhouse

My advice....burn it...rust spores I believe can survive for up to 3 years in the soil
