| Hello, yet another question! I planted my garlic in the 1st week of October - 50% Roja and the same of some supermarket produce. At the moment, the cheapo unnamed garlic is about 4 inches high and looking very good, yet there is no sign of the Roja. Is this because the Roja grows more slowly or has it died the death, it being too wet or cold? Any opinions would be gratefully appreciated. ![]() |

| It might be that it is slow to grow, you may as well leave it in and hope for the best. Interesting that the supermarket garlic is growing well, I have always avoided it at this time of year and instead planted it after xmas, buying GC garlic for autumn planting |

| Hello Murray. I don't think it means anything. What maters is the size of the bulbs at the end. If you're worried that your Roja has rotted or died, then you could have a poke in there and see. I think they will be fine - but better to know now.

| My supermarket garlic was started in cell trays in the greenhouse and has been out on the lottie for 3 weeks now, having started to grow really well. The Solent Wight clove donated by daughter had the same treatment, but started about 2 weeks later and it is very slow to start. Some green shoots showing, but nowhere near 100%. |

| I grow sueprmarket garlic every year with no problems, last year i did do some garden centre garlic and it did not grow as good as the supermarket cloves. Cant remeber the garden centre veriaty though. I might have had some good luck though. |

| can garlic/onion sets be grown in containers or grow bags. If so what size pots. Also does anyone know if I can use the compost from the grow bag again after I have used it for raddishes. Last edited by kwa50; 28-11-2007 at 06:43 PM. |

| Garlic will grow in pretty much anything so long as it's big enough. Growbags are fine and pots are too - 5" diameter should do. Just remember to feed them after about 6 weeks or so when the compost / bag nutrients are getting low.

| No sign of any of mine (planted straight in the ground a few weeks ago). They were just straighforward supermarket bulbs. I think I may have planted them too deep - I was worried about them getting frosted. Might do some more in pots in my shed...

| I have read that the cloves are formed by the cold weather so guess frost isn't a problem. However, if you have had it wet they might have been spoiled by that. Haven't tried growing any yet and really must try soon. Last edited by shirlthegirl43; 03-12-2007 at 01:36 PM. |

I use garlic all the time when I'm cooking so it makes sense to grow it - why I didn't do it this year I'll never know!

| Wondering much the same HeyWayne, I use masses of garlic - makes me laugh when people say how much they enjoyed the food but have declined the roast garlic as they don't eat the stuff - they will have consumed at least 2 cloves already hidden in other things! |
