  • garlic problems again

    Hi all,

Any ideas what is going on here? I had similar problems last year.

    This is chesnok red variety.

It looks like each clove has started growing separately, so I pulled them up....

    Should I have left them?

Well, the one on the left looks fine, although it doesn't look ready yet. The other one not. I remember the pics from last year, it's really strange - is it the same variety as you grew last year? It's never happened to me. I've got white onion rot on my garlic this year - gutted.
    # just looked at the photo again! Yes, both are sprouting! Can you just pull them all up, mince the garlic and store in vinegar? Keeps for ages.

Hi Scarlet, different variety to last year.

These are just 2 that I pulled up that are sprouting, but the remaining 30 or so are also exactly the same!!!!!

      Each clove is growing!!!!

Shall I just pull them all up? As I guess thats that now...

I think it's really strange - I'd never seen anything like it until you posted the same last year. When you open them out what do the single cloves look like?

          When did you plant them?

I planted mine round about the same time and the cloves still don't look very big. Variety Messedrome, seed garlic, and mine won't be ready until July.I think you should wait a bit loosen the soil round the plants and wait until the leaves start to turn yellow then see.

I am experiencing the same fate I think...

One thing I remember, I planted by garlic cloves in 3 batches last fall (because of laziness mostly). First batches were planted in early Oct, then mid October and the last ones were planted on early Nov).

Yesterday I noticed 5-6 plants from the first batch were 'sprouting'. I am a novice gardener though, I had a decent result last year out of 10 plants and decided to plant more last year.

I think one of my garlic plants is doing that. It has a lot of thin leaves in the middle some of them look like they have been crimped. Will take a pic tomorrow .

I post a thread about my Iberian Wight and VC suggested I look at this thread. I found that a couple of garlic shoots had bent down. I brought them at the Garden Centre. I decided to pull one of them and discovered garlic cloves in the stem.
Do I use these cloves for new plants or just eat them? Showing photo again.

I would say just eat them, at least that is what I am doing!
