  • Gardening Mags causing me panic attacks

Hi there folks, its my rant of the month.

I bet its just me but I buy two gardening mags almost every month, sometimes for the seeds but mostly to remind me what I need to do on the lottie and for some of the great tips in the articles.

Why oh why do they print the March one at the beginning of February and the April one at the beginning of March and put them in the shops ................ and as soon as I read the article thats about what to do this month or what to harvest and plant I go into panic mode and think I'm nowhere near ready to do what they say. Last year I even rushed down to dig an area for planting peas as it wasn't even anywhere near ready only to realise that it was a month early when I got back home and was eating my tea. I've just had a panic tonight reading one that tells me to sow my spuds and then remember its the March issue that I bought at the beginning of Feb.

    Rant over
The day that Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck ...

... is the day they make vacuum cleaners

    Do what I do:
Get 2 nice simple Seed Sowing Calender pdf's, then take the average of what they say.
Or just work to the one that best suits.

Presently I am working on the basis that it is almost March and it is quite mild, so I can therefore put the March ones in. Think it is called boredom.

One year, I kept all the magazines and put them away somewhere safe.
The following year, I pulled them out and read them at the right time, not 2 months in advance!

Today I received the RHS magazine - for March

On the subject of the RHS one - beautiful article about daffs, but why now, when they're in flower, not September/October when we could actually go and buy some of the varieties? I'll have lost or thrown out the magazine by September........

(Other gardening magazines with annoyingly out of season articles are also available!)
          Another happy Nutter...

              Totally agree,
This is my first year properly gardening, so buying all the mags I can lay my hands on for advice and tips. I was thinking I'm nowhere near ready to start sowing yet. and like others realised its a month ahead.

those with smartphones the RHS grow your own app is great you can set what veg, fruit & herbs you are going to grow and then it notifies you when it's time to get going.

I'm working to my sowing plan that I obtained by putting in my location and last frost date see Alans Allotment: Sowing & Planting Plan there is a link to the web site that generates it for you. I have added additional personal information about jobs and target dates for infrastructure works as well.

This one is a basic plan, which you enter your location into to get frost and sowing dates, for your location.

completly agree muddy boots its the main reason i stopped buying the mags ,the seeds are usefull but the dates and sowing times are no help at all ,difficult i know to put sowing times in as in scotland it will be dif to cornwall but i like yourself think after reading that im way behind and start sowing everthing and then regret it when i realise that ive sown some stuff to late and some stuff to early ,cheers for the link thelma ,cheers

My faith in my sanity has been restored, at least its not just me being more intolerant and getting to be a 'grumpy old man' as I get older. I really thought it was just me that had the problem with those mags giving me conflicting information about what to harvest and what to plant, just bought the latest mags and I'm being told to plant and sow all manner of things and the heading just says ..... 'This months crops to Sow & Harvest' ...... NOT!!!! bought in March and its for April!!!!

I'm usually a few months behind when I get chance to read them anyway

Even more confusing was the April Issue Competition was live on the web site and the current issue yesterday was still the March Issue from February and today it's the April Issue in March and both April & March competitions are on the page as there is an overlap, or so I've been informed with the February (March Issue) Competition actually ending on the 17th March.

So there is me thinking that as one ended the other started but that's not the case.

I must admit it did my little brain in... It's a bit like watching the old comedy programme "SOAP" Confused you will be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSaNWYHmUvI
