  • Fruit Flies?

I've got fruit flies buzzing around some of my window sill seedlings - does anyone know why this is, or how I can organically get rid of them?

    Thanks very much,

    Jono.

I have had the same problem, Jono.
It could indicate that your compost is too wet. Try and water from underneath, ie stand them in a tray and dont overwater.
    Hopefully that might help

This is one of the reasons Himself complains about the window sills being full of bl**dy plants.

Try hanging one of those yellow sticky sheets above your plants.

I don't think they'll be fruit flies (fatter bodies, slightly reddish hue), they are more likely to be fungus gnats (little black flitty things)

That might be it actually. I was watering from underneath, and there were no flies.

The seedlings are on the windowsill at work, so as you can imagine I need to get rid of the flies!

In addition to watering from underneath, I think keeping something gritty on the soil's surface (actual grit, vermiculite, etc) helps to keep them off as well (it discourages the adults from reentering, or something like that).

Ah, that sounds a good idea too. Thank you, I'll try that.
