  • Frost Temps?

What temp does frost form at? What temp is bad news for tender plants/veg?

My car gives me an "Ice Warning" at 3 degrees C or less..

Looking at my local weather report here: Today's Weather in Caerphilly - weather.co.uk it shows it going down to 2C.. I've not yet fleeced anything - but my apricot tree is just about starting to form blossom, and I can see a few fruit buds forming too (which, look amazing!) so don't want to tempt fate jus by leaving them out.

My spuds in sacks are outside too, so wasn't sure if Ineeded to bring them into the garage or not. Couple of them have shoots about 2inches tall so far.

I'd be really interested to know the answer as virtually all of my seedlings are now ouside in the blowaway greenhouse...would I be better bringing them in to our porch and placing them out again in the morning for the daytime air? (Porch gets too hot and sunny).
Think its going to be 3s and 4s here overnight for the next week.

Keep your potato shoots covered & they should be ok, it's the shoots that are in danger of frost so should be ok if under compost.

Water is at its densest at 4C. Below that it will start to solidify, expand and then freeze at 0C. If there is a cool wind then this can have a further chilling effect. When water expands below 4C then it will cause damage to the plant cells. So I'd cover the spuds with newspaper and fleece the apricot.

I'm not quite sure how a piece of paper can keep the cold temperature off. I guess it's enough to keep the dew off the plant which might then freeze. Anything in a greenhouse will be OK.

          Yup^^^

So you should really expect some sort of 'frosting' at , and below 4C.

....sounds like some peeps will be rushing round their gardens in their jimjams

My spud buckets are all in the greenhouse all the time - I still don't trust it. And my toms and chillies are going in and out of the house night and morning. I can't face sowing again at this stage!

I always was a bit of a chancer. I've had my toms and peppers in a cold greenhouse for about a fortnight now. (On a high shelf, which is a bit warmer)

The max/min thermometer assures me the temp has dropped to zero, and once below but toms & peppers seem to be thriving? I have left a window open as well because at the other end of the scale the temp has rocketed throughout the past few days.

Not for one minute recommending that anyone else tries this btw, I've been lucky up til now........... but could easily still get caught out!!

Me too Snadger - I've come to the conclusion if there is not a real 'frost' forecast I just leave all my plants out (I know I'm tempting fate but it just works for me!!) - my chillis and peppers are in one of those plastic 4 tier greenhouses all the time (and have been since end of Feb) and are happy and my plum toms are out all the time now regardless of weather and I accidently left the little cherry seedlings out for the last two days in the elements and they are thriving too (although in the unzipped plastic g'house again today!) and my brassica seedlings etc have been outside since they germinated and are as happy as larry - guess I'm just lucky (or about to get a horrible shock when my little gems peg it!
