    Frost forecast - protecting seedlings outdoors ...

    It is forecast to be -5 tonight here. Probably the coldest since I did my first sowings this year mid March.

    I have various seedlings in the beds which are apparently ok to be in this time of year according to packets (????). Lettuce, cabbage, beets, carrots, peas, spinach for example.

    The beds are covered with enviromesh cloches and I have also laid some fleece over the top of the seedlings.... is this enough protection?

    I feel a little guilty now....I weeded and welcomed to the world a row of carrot and beetroot seedlings but didn't think to tuck them in

    I did pop some half rotted leaves over the few potatoes showing their heads though and tried but failed epically to cover my plum trees.

      ..don't feel guilty... I didnt even think about covering the minarette trees - one of which is a plum!

        I think some of your seedlings would be fairly tough else they wouldn't tell you to sow outside at this time of year unlike tender plants eg squashes toms etc where they say not to plant out till June.......

          thats what I am hoping- if Meteor peas can be planted out in February, surely they must e able to take a bit of a nip in the air- right?? (hopeful grin)

              ...its the little gems and carrots I'm worred about most... they look so delicate! Ive got twinkle and oregon peas up too about 3 inches high. fingers crossed they'll be ok.

                Don't know about where you are, but round here its going to be a naughty one. I have just been outside and its already hovering about zero. So this will be a prolonged frost the worst kind, fingers crossed everyone.

                  The fleece tents are in place in the gh and the conservatoru ......anything else will have to take a chance .

                    I Left outside al my peas leek carrots strawberry onion but all or under fleece or in my blowaway. My potatoes are earthed up and the free all nice wrapped up I hope

                      Typical just as I was hardening my stuff off! Folks on my allotment site have runners in, etc - no idea how they will have coped!
