  • Free App: Frost Alert

    Hi all,
A while back I was thinking of putting out some of my plants but got paranoid because of the frost risk and left them in. Aside from buying a wireless thermometer for £30 or remembering to check the forecast every day I couldn't see a way to keep on eye on the temperature in my area to know when to bring my plants in.

Therefore I set about creating a little web app which will get the feed from weather.com and alert me when the temperature drops below a certain minimum. I'm making this a free resource, and need some testers. Knowing how lovely all of you are on these forums I was wondering if you fancied giving me hand by signing up and using the service? It's still in beta at the moment and I obviously give no guarantee at all as to its effectiveness.

The site is completely unstyled at the moment, so it looks crap, but don't let that put you off. I need to modify the email alerts to include the links back to weather.com for their pollen alerts etc, but otherwise it's ready to go.

So, if you could, sign up at FrostAlert: Free weather alert and leave any comments or suggestions here and I'll endevour to fix it up. Don't post the link or pass it on just yet, as it still isn't ready for a full release.

          OK, cool. Thanks.
I admit it's a bit late in the year now, as the frosts are nearly over, but I suppose it'll be useful in the Autumn and for subsequent years.

Sorry piskie, I noticed that I'd left a debug button on the homepage and so I hurredly posted an update resulting in about a minute of downtime. You must have just hit it. Have another try now.

That so sums me up Crundy - far too quick off the draw without thinking, my Dad always said it would get me into trouble

              ...got it now

Don't forget to add some alerts for your location! It won't email you otherwise.
Oh, and you can add multiple locations, in case your house and allotment are in different locations.

I've signed up, Crundy. This sounds very promising.

One initial suggestion (always wanting to run before I walk!): is there any way you can incorporate a postcode search? I live in a village in Nottinghamshire which gets similar (but different) weather to Nottingham, and similar (but still not the same) weather to Mansfield. I have added both as alerts.

I don't think the location search feed supports postcodes unfortunately, but I'll have a look at the API documentation in case I'm missing anything.

                              Hi

I've just tried signing up and after choosing create new account and putting my email and password in I got the following error -

                              Server Error in '/' Application.
                              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

Hope this helps you. Brilliant idea by the way!
