  • found some of last years spuds

in the garden, can I eat them? They look fine
No idea how I missed them.

When we moved into this quarter (Aug 07) I found 6kg of red (?) spuds hiding in the borders and knowing how long the quarter had been empty - they would have been almost 18 months old.

    They were perfect

Spuds are so easy to miss if you aren't rootling/fertling/turning over (oops sorry, Rugby term) etc properly

    Enjoy

Provided they are firm eat them. You will find no matter how careful you are you will always miss some.

They are firm. One has a tiny hole but I will cut out whatever is lurking...

Very excited, as all the rest were eaten before august!

I found some last year in early spring which I'd been growing supposedly for Christmas & forgot about, they were lovely! It's just as though they've been kept in a cold store for a few months which is what a lot of people do with veg. through the winter so they should be fine.

And any you miss now will become those annoying 'volunteers' that pop up in the middle of your broad beans!

My lazy neighbour only dug up his last years potatoes last weekend. He said they were the tastiest thing he ever had, and he's still alive and well. Go for it!

I've purposely left some in as an experiment.......dug some up last week they were fine.............might even keep a few that are hens egg size and use them as seed tatties for this year!

The only drawback is if you have a serious slug problem. Then you'll find them full of holes if you leave them. Generally speaking they keep well in the soil - a bit like putting things in a clamp.

I found a few tiny spuds in the earth emptied from the Spuds-for-Christmas bin (just got a few from that) and - having read Snadger's post - now I'm thinking of using them for planting.

By all means experiment frannie but for goodness sake don't use them as you ONLY source of spuds for this year.............buy a few seed tatties and compare the difference as an experiment!

i've saved my ultra mini spuds to plant, if i can find a spare corner, hardly worth eating something 5p piece sized, so thought i'd plant em and see what happens
