  • Forking tomatoes - 2016

Does this look like another bad year for tomatoes forking?

I'm sure I've been reasonably good at pinching out the laterals / sideshoots appearing between the leaf and main stem. But I've noticed a couple of my plants have forked.

I think it may be. I tidied my plants a week or so, went to do them again yesterday and most (out of 22, 11 different varieties) plants in gh1 had forked

KairdiffKid - once I'd stopped giggling over the title of your post (oooerr matron..!!), I have noticed that many of mine have done this too ....
      What causes this forking..?

All three of my Galina have forked - all three of my Sungold have not. I'm growing on the forks (two strings for each plant) - hopefully it means double the amount of tomatoes!

Just read through the 'old 2012' forking link - it's hilarious, all nutters - it really made me smile. Oh and yes, it has put my mind at rest about forking now! I'll just let them go with the flow!!!

Might they just be fighting back against all the side shoot removal?

I havent done a check in the last few weeks but quite a lot of mine have forked. I actually think they look nicer than just a cordon

Lots of mine have forked as well. Interesting, as they were given to me, & 4 of them came with the proviso "I can't remember what I sowed & I've lost the labels" so really don't know if they're wayward cordens or normal indeterminates
                      Another happy Nutter...

                        Yes.

I occasionally get a visit from an old boy or two come to inspect (laugh at) my veg patch. No-one ever laughs at my tomato plants. Indeed, every year they comment that my plants look better than theirs.

My Galina's always fork - think it's just what they do. And like yours, the sungold haven't. Most of the others have though. They also seem to be hell bent on bushing out instead of growing up. Put very little height on but keep producing side shoots.

I know one of mine has. Can't remember what type it is. I'll be leaving it though.
