| i just sowed some of these, (a freebie of someone i bought seeds off) has anyone tried them? are they tasty? and do they really keep carrot fly away? and is it worth planting them in between ordinary carrots? will they keep the flies off them too? i really wish i knew all this stuff oh and while i'm on the subject of carrots, when you chop the heads off carrots and put them in water they grow leaves, if you planted them, would they grow new carrots? yes i know probably a really stupid question, but i just had some really yummy carrots for tea, and have no idea what variety they were, so if i could grow them from carrot tops, it would be good ![]()

| Yes Yes Sort of Work better if planted with others see below Yes If you plant them in between other carrots the fly is supposed to smell the other carrots and attack them first No See above Final question No |

| ok, thanks ... maybe i'll not plant them between other carrots, i don't want my carrots eating at all ... so what happens to the sprouted carrot tops then? i remember growing them as a kid, but never got past sprouting lol

| LYNDA The carrot fly resistant carrot work on the theory that they have less carrot smell so do not attract the fly if you sow a sacrificial crop something like Paris Market these will attract the attention of the fly leaving the so call resistant type alone Last edited by PAULW; 29-06-2008 at 06:24 PM. |

| oh right lol, i was hoping it was going to keep them away from all my carrots lol ...... i don't want to sacrifice anything ..... they are my babies lol, oh well, touch wood maybe i'll be lucky and not get any carrot fly anyway i don't know anyone who grows veg round here, cos most of the houses round about are terraces, and theres no farming, other than cows, so maybe theres no carrot fly in the area? does it work like that? i guess i should look ...... goes off to google ![]() oh i just saw on a site to grow onions near carrots, my onions and spring onions are in the next row to the normal carrots ![]()

| Yes that should help I had a very clean crop last year doing this, wouldn't have thought there would be much problem with the carrot fly in Manchester it rains that much the little buggers should drown before they can do any damage. Last edited by PAULW; 29-06-2008 at 07:47 PM. |

| i would normally at this point say it doesn't actually rain as much as everyone seems to think, but after having a monsoon for the last week, lets hope so lol

| I use coriander. I grow it in the same bed and chop it off every few days - and sprinkle the choppings around the carrot bed. It's worked thus far. The only time I had carrot fly was when i got cocky - and as my other post will tell you the purple and yellow ones were fine but the others weren't at all.
