Strange this year. Trying two different types of runners this time, Enorma and White Lady. Neither have reached the top of the poles yet and although they both have masses of flowers (so hopefully more beans than last year 'cause they were rubbish), there aren't many leaves. I've never known this before, my usual Scarlet Emperors have had loads of leaves that have always hidden the wigwam. Anyone else got few leaves?

Lots of leaves must MUST mean too much nitrogen? Lots of flowers is a GOOD thing !

We have some reaching the tops of the canes, but lots and lots of flowers very low down.. had another boiling today.. damn good they were too. If we dont get at least 100 lbs of beans i will crying in my sleep all winter.Comment

last year we had none due to something keep eating them ........so whatever we get this year is a bonus and I must say there are plenty of flowers ....we have white lady, painted lady and celebration .white lady are in the lead

Both my Red Rum & White Lady flowered very early in their growth cycle (hardly 3ft high). But now all are at their full height 8/12ft and producing well Swmbo's already freezing.
FF I don't where abouts you are in Sheffield but many moons ago I used to work all over your city and I seem to remember talking to a gardener at Foxhill (top of the hill) and he was a good month behind myself in Nottingham
Not gardening but do you still have those wonderful "pork shops". I well remember one near the big hospital the hot pork cobs were a dream and pork pies to take back to Notts for friends and family.

In the home veg plot I have Moonlight runners - loads of flowers and beans but not too many leaves, and Bird's Egg frenchies, lots of leaves but fewer flowers (although they are quite insignificant and maybe I'm missing them). Both have had the same treatment.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

My Blue Lake French beans are still small at the moment but they seem to have put a bit of a spurt on in the last few days. I put them out in April when we had that warm spell and they started quite well but seemed to stop at about 10" tall. I planted some bush types as a back up and went to check my original beans and they are between 1-2ft tall and seem to be filling out nicely with plenty of flowers and leaves. They are well behind last years but seem to be playing catch up. I wonder if it was down to the warm spring followed by that wet cold spell a few weeks back.Comment

My moonlight runner beans seem to be the most healthiest looking I have, flowers on them now.
However, I have had some climbing french beans but they aren't climbing very well - seem very sparce leaf wise.
Hoping that some nice sunny days will help them on their way.Comment
