  • Flowering Potatoes

Most of my potatoes are starting to flower now. Many second earlies are flowering before first earlies and some do not flower at all. I have noticed the ones growing in bags are starting to look thirsty so I am starting to water them at night and they are getting a good soaking. I also have some nutrimax that I am spraying onto the foliage at night once the heat has gone a bit just so that the plant does not get stressed.
Now I now many other people will be wanting to have a furtle to see if there are any potatoes but just hold back for another few weeks and your reward will be even greater.

Remove any flowers from the haulms so that your plant puts its energy into the spuds.
Give them plenty of water now.

If your potatoes are a long way off you should start to think about spraying against blight. Dithane 945 is all you can really use to prevent the disease.

I have just got a new video camera for my birthday today so you can expect more videos coming soon to update you all on my progress.

Thanks for this, very useful as my second earlies are just starting to flower. Spuds nowhere near big enough yet though, will try and be patient

Ooh I didn't realise letting them flower was a no no. Time to let the sproglet loose on them.

Talking of flowering potatoes, my main crop are about to flower at the moment. Is this supposed to happen now? In my naivety I had expected them to flower later than my earlies. What am I supposed to do, chop them off?

Great advice, but do you remove the flowers as soon as you see them bud, or when they are actually opening?

jacob, I've shifted your query from an old post on flowering potatoes to a new one.....Tattieman is our resident potato expert, so have a read of his notes above. It should help you.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I nip them out once I see the bud forming. I am going to leave the flowers on some and see what difference it makes to the crop. I don't like taking the flowers off as they are nice to look at.

If you go to this website The British Potato Variety Database you should be able to select the varieties from there and it tells you if they flower or not.
