  • flowering leeks

    hi there my leeks have started to flower do i need to take the flower heads off or is it best if i dig up the leeks now ?

    How long have they been planted tracy? I've never had a leek go to seed except in it's second year...
    They are good flowers for bees, so you could leave them in and then collect the seeds for next year.

      they have been in the raised bed for about 4 ish months we have had a recent hot spell i dont think that helped .if i dig them up too early will the flavour not be there

        Are they in their second year if so wait for the seed head and save the seed for next year.

          You can dig them up as soon as they look big enough to use, they taste and smell 'leeky' as soon as they're bigger than grass

                i can only grow through the winter if i dont harvest leeks onions and peas by the middle of august they just die but i water twice a day and even in the height of summer (when its 40 degrees) nearly all other crops do well just get a bit wilty
