  • Floppy brassica seedlings

    Hi All,

Not a major issue, but I wondered if anyone knows why this happens... my brassica seedlings (kale and PSB in this case) look great up to a certain size, say 4-6" then they just 'fall over' under their own weight and start growing sideyways. I can bury them a bit deeper when i pot on to try and correct this, but why does it happen? Is it because they're raised undercover, so don't develop a strong enough stem due to lack of wind?

Yes, it's too warm for them undercover so they are getting leggy. They need cooler conditions. I sow mine outside in a frame with some net over to stop pests.

Thanks Scarlet, I potted them on this morning and moved them outside under netting... hopefully they'll bulk up now.

Its the same with beetroot. I tend to sow my beetroot indoors in small pots before potting out when they are about 4" tall. If you dont bury them up the stem then the tend to fall over. After a while i earth them up a bit just like you would a potato.
