  • Fish water

I have been looking around online and found out that I could use fish water as a fertilizer for my plants.

Does anyone use it? And if so is it any good?

If you look up Aquaponics, there is loads of info on the subject:

Thanks, I will do. But I don't want to do aquaponics. I just wanted to know if anyone else when doing a water change uses that water from the fish tank for their veg.

        But thanks anyway

I don't see why not, that's what aquaponics is.

Should be fine. I'm using the pond water to feed my veg.

                Been thinking about this!

I presume you mean fish tank water?

From what I recall , you need to add a chemical to the water to neutralise something or other????? ( nope- you can clearly see I am no expert with fish)

but...presumably that makes the water more 'neutral'?

that being the case I would think the water with fish poo/droppings/squiggly bits...(whatever they are officially called) would be OK.

Having said all that , I'm assuming it's fresh and not saline water???

                Interesting thread!
Looking forward to hearing other replies

I have used pond water as BM says, but that hasn't had chemicals added.

I have a goldfish bowl and a turtle, both freshwater so I assume I can stop throwing water down the drain and water my plants with it?

Yes it is fish tank water and it is fresh water too.
Me and my boyfriend have a fish tank(he looks after it) and everyday he adds a chemical called leaf zone to help his plants that is growing in the tank with the fish.
I do not really know any more about it. But he tells me that that the fish poo is good for using on plants.

Thanks, so is it better then having to shop buy fertilizer?

My friend has just sent me a link saying its a good thing using fish water.

Reuse Fish Tank Water as Plant Fertilizer - Philadelphia Green Parenting | Examiner.com

And also said if a fish dies you can put it in your soil to because the plants will thrive on it.
