Fish boxes for tomatoes? And comfrey?

    Fish boxes for tomatoes? And comfrey?

    I am thinking of growing tomatoes in fishboxes in my greenhouse this year (instead of grow bags). I have some of the bottomless pot thingys to put on top of the compost, and would probably get 3 plants to a fishbox.

    There will still be plenty of space at the front of the boxes to plant something else. What would grow well with tomatoes? Could I put peppers in front of the toms?

    Also, I was thinking of growing comfrey in a fishbox so it doesn't spread all over the lottie - would that work or do they need more room for their roots?

    CK polystyrene fish boxes come in many sizes can you let us know what sizes you have so grapes can better advise.

    The ones I have would seem to be smaller than yours but thought about it myself.

      Basil, if you listen to Monty Don. Mind you, he was the bloke who told me to grow radishes on top of my spuds, and that was a mistake.

        I reckon as OP is on the coast like me, the fishboxes mentioned are the large plastic rectangular tubs that hold 40 -50 liters used by fishing boats to store and transport the catch. I suppose they fall overboard and I collect them on the shoreline, usually get 4-5 every year. This year I've got Strawberries, some early French beans in the tunnel and salad leaves growing in them.

        I think I'd stick to a maximum of 3 Tomatoes in one - I think anything else would get very serious competition from the toms for nutrients and light.

        I think Comfrey is better off in the ground as it needs its roots to go deep and spread to make itself rich in nutrients. I think growing comfrey in a container would defeat the object as it can only take so much goodness out of whatever soil or mix you put in it.

          Unlike Mrb my radishes grew at treat on top of the spuds! Like KC I reckon comfrey should be in the ground as it has deep roots which bring the nutrients up from a long way down. I have not found that the Bocking14 variety does not spread much, I'm on my fourth cut this year.

            Oh they grew ok. Just weren't ready when the spuds pushed them out of the way.

              I always grow a marigold and a Basil in each pot, as the Thrips and Whitefly cant stand them and stay away.

                  Yep King Carrot - they're the ones I have! Before I got my lottie I used to grow all my veg in them.

                  I get what you're saying about the comfrey - I'll find a little patch for it at the lottie instead.

                  Davyburns, I like the idea of growing marigold and basil with the toms - I think I'll give that a go.

                    Also for the comfrey, use a variety called bocking 14. It's not as rampant and won't take over too much.
                    Clay soil is just the big yins way of letting you know nothing good comes easy.
