  • Fish Blood and Bone

Anyone use it these days ?

I used some bonemeal to encourage root growth on a two year old bare root hedge last year....

Spent several weeks wondering if I had contracted BSE or worse

So there was veggie me, sprinkling dead cow bone dust... most of which ended up in my eyes. The hedge is doing well but, I'm still have dreams of my eyes growing roots

Anyone know of 'nice' alternatives to traditional slow release products ?

    Hi Maf

I have used Fish Blood & Bone on my veggie patch, i was advised as it was very alkaline and needed some nutrients, seems to have done the job as everything is growing lovely!

I hear that Chicken pellets can be good, surely these must be veggie as chickens dont eat meat!!

    Good luck

We've just bought chicken pellets; our garden next door neighbour uses them so I thought if I have to put up with the smell anyway, I might as well go ahead and gt the benefits.

I use blood fish and bone or bone meal. I also use chicken manure pellets, however these have to be covered in mulch before the dogs are allowed out. They looove chicken pellets and are in there with napkins round their necks happy little souls

As long as the bone meal is sterilised you won't contract Anthrax!

Chickens will eat whatever you give them! Especially slugs and snails and worms and bugs. They love maggots too. They will even eat chicken if you give it to them (shudder). Omniverous isn't the word. Well, it is, actually, but you know what I mean...

Meanwhile... as someone interested in alternatives to blood fish and bone, I have found these pages worth a read. Can't tell you anything about how good the advice is as we are in Year 1 of serious growing, but here they are:

Still use it. Can't be bothered with all these different things. Good compost, Fish blood and bone and some manure from time to time. Does everything proud.

I tend to use the free agricultural fertilisers I get from a farmer friend. Don't need much and the veg love it.

So worms and slugs are vegetables now?

Our friends who live on a nearby farm, have chickens, and they chase and kills (and eat) mice!
I use blood fish and bone meal. It's the only thing apart from removing brambles, that I wear gloves for.
