  • First tomato to ripen

I have toms in the Greenhouse, outside in growbags and a hanging basket with Garden Pearl.
First one this year is Garden Pearl.
Last year I think it was Sungold (Yummy)
    What's your first one.

My first was sungold. (Last week )
    I agree 100% yummy

All my toms are in the polytunnel.
I noticed this morning that both red & yellow tumbling toms have one each very nearly ready.

My first was the unknown seedling that appeared in the GH compost and looked so healthy I potted it up Its a bush, has medium sized fruit and, if I had to guess what it was, I'd say either Mountain Princess, Legend or Oregon Spring.
After that, I've picked Balconi Red, Tumbler, Red Robin and Rambling Red Stripe - all small toms in equally small pots.
Yesterday, picked the first Garden Pearl.
I have enough to keep me in salad and sarnies but not enough to give away yet!

Mine are only just starting to turn, very late this year for some reason.

My Shirley and Balconi red and yellow grown in the house started ripening in the middle of May.
The first 2 Shirleys in my friend's greenhouse are starting to turn red but are not yet ripe enough to pick. I think Sungold will be next but as they are outside I may have to wait a week or 2 yet.

I'm not growing a great variety this year - just Tigerella plus one self-sown San Marzano as I grew that the previous year. My first ripe tomato from Tigerella was over a week ago, the other is forming fruit but none ripe yet.

My first was a Garden Pearl the last week in June, last week the Yellow Peardrops and Jaune Flamme joined in *sings just one Rosella, give it to me*

None of the others are changing colour yet, very strange

I'll come back to you on that one, finally we have rain and I'm not going out there to see which if the 22 different varieties it is I'm growing this year has done the business first. (but I will do once it stops raining)

What I would ask is why have the toms in the middle of the bush ripened before all the others that have been exposed to direct sunlight?

The flowers nearest the stem open first, so the tomatoes in the middle are the oldest. Light is not necessary for tomatoes to turn red, heat is what is required (not too much heat, obviously, otherwise the tomatoes will cook!).

Sungold are trickling in nicely and a few Mountain Magic are red but still very hard (they take ages to soften)
